14th Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Due to Health

The 14th Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar, has resigned from his office with immediate effect on 21 July 2025, citing health concerns and the need to follow medical advice. The resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar comes on the first day of the monsoon session of the Parliament where he presided over the Rajya Sabha as the Chairman..

The Vice President is the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Jagdeep Dhankar was sworn in as the 14th Vice-President of India on 11 August 2022 for a term of five years.

Third Vice President to Resign Before Completing Five-Year Term

According to Article 67 (a) of the Indian Constitution, a sitting Vice-President may resign from his office by addressing his resignation letter to the President of India.

Thus, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar resigned by submitting his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is the third Vice President to resign, after V.V. Giri and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Resignation of Varahagiri Venkata Giri or V.V. Giri

• The third Vice-President of India, V.V. Giri, held the office from 13 May 1967 to 3 May 1969.
• After the death of President Zakir Hussain, he became the acting President of India from May 3, 1969, to July 19, 1969.
• He resigned from the post of Vice President to contest the Presidential election, which he won, and became the fourth Vice President of India (24 August 1969 to 23 August 1974). 

Resignation of Bahiron Singh Shekhawat 

• Bhairon Singh Shekhwat was the 11th Vice President of India and held office from 19th August 2002 to 21st July 2007.
• He resigned from his office in 2007 after he lost the Presidential election against Pratibha Patil Singh. 
• Pratibha Patil Singh was the 12th President of India and the first woman to hold the office.

There have been other Vice Presidents who resigned after being elected as the President of India- R Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma, and K. R. Narayanan.

10th Vice President Krishna Kant is the only Vice President who died in Office ( 21 August 1997 to 27 August 2002).

Vacancy in Vice President's Office 

There is no provision in the Constitution for a post of Acting Vice President of India.

Thus, the post will remain vacant till a new person is elected as the Vice President of India.

The constitution does not stipulate any time period for the election of a new Vice President in case the office falls vacant due to death, resignation, removal or otherwise. 

Article 68 (b) provides that in case of vacancy due to death, resignation, removal or otherwise, the election to elect a new Vice-President shall be held “ as soon as possible”.

Chairman of Rajya Sabha 

As the Vice President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha , the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha will be the presiding officer of the Rajya Sabha till a new Vice President is elected.

About Jagdeep Dhankar 

Jagdeep Dhankar was born on 18 May 1951 in Kithana village in the Jhunjhunu District of  Rajasthan

By profession, he was a lawyer and the youngest person to be elected President of the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association, Jaipur, in 1987.

He later joined politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha and the State assembly.

Lok Sabha - elected in 1989 from the Jhunjhunu Parliamentary Constituency.

Vidhan Sabha- elected in 1993 from Kishangarh assembly seat to the Rajasthan legislative Assembly.

Minister - He served as the Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990.

Governor - He was Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022
