The 34th International Day of the Older Persons is being observed worldwide on 1 October 2024. The day is observed to attract the world's and policymakers' attention in responding to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and promoting the development of a society for all ages.
The day also recognises the contributions of older persons to society and their wisdom.
The United Nations defines an old person as someone 65 years or older, while in India, old persons or senior citizens are 60 years or older.
The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 14 December 1990 to observe 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons.
The first International Day of Older Persons was observed on 1 October 1991.
The theme of the 34th International Day of Older Persons is Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide".
According to the United Nations, by 2030, the older population is expected to be greater than the young population. The theme highlights these demographic trends and emphasises the need to expand training and educational opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology to address the global shortage of care workers.
Gerontology is the study of ageing and its effect on the society. Geriatrics is a medical speciality focused on caring for and treating older persons.
The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment celebrates the International Day of Older Persons in India. The Ministry is the nodal ministry for the cause of senior citizens.
In 2005, the ministry instituted the Vayoshreshtha Sammans for eminent Senior Citizens and Institutions in recognition of their service to elderly people. In 2013, the Vayoshreshtha Sammans was upgraded to a “National Award.”
On the occasion of International Day of Older Persons, the National Award ‘Vayoshreshtha Samman’ is given in thirteen categories to distinguished senior citizens and institutions who have rendered unparalleled contributions to the overall well-being of the elderly.
This year, the award will be conferred at a function in New Delhi, where the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Virendra Kumar, will be the chief guest.
