Inga Ruginienė Appointed as New Prime Minister of Lithuania

The Lithuanian Parliament Seimas has approved Social Democrat Inga Ruginienė as the new Prime Minister of Lithuania. After President Gitanas Nausėda signs the order appointing her as Prime Minister, she will officially take office.

• The Lithuanian Parliament has approved Social Democrat Inga Ruginienė as the new Prime Minister of Lithuania. Lawmakers approved Inga Ruginienė as the new head of government by 78 votes to 35. With 82 out of 141 seats in the parliament, or Seimas, it holds a solid majority.
• After President Gitanas Nausėda signs the order appointing her as Prime Minister, she will officially take office. Ruginienė was elected to parliament for the first time in 2024. Before her political career, she served as the president of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation.
• Nausėda, who was separately elected, is the face of the country on the world stage and has been one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s full-scale invasion. This stance enjoys broad political support in the Baltic nation of about 2.8 million people.

Lithuania

• Lithuania is a country located in the Baltic region of Europe. It borders Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and the Russian semi-exclave Kaliningrad Oblast to the southwest, and has a maritime border with Sweden to the west.

• It is a mountainous region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, mainly including Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and parts of southern Russia.
