Center approves Rs. 3027.86 Cr for State Disaster Mitigation Projects

The High-Level Committee of the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) in a meeting in New Delhi on 29 January 2025, has approved Rs. 3027.86 crore to the various state governments to implement disaster mitigation projects.

The fund will be used by the various state governments to undertake steps to reduce the risk, and impact of a disaster or a threatening disaster situation.

Composition and Chairman of the High-Level Committee OF NDMF

• The High-Level Committee comprises the government of India’s Home, Finance, and Agriculture Ministries and also includes the Vice Chairman of the NITI Aayog.
• The Union Home Minister is the chairman of the High-Level Committee. 
• At present Amit Shah is the Chairman of the High Level Committee.

About  National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF)

• The NDMF was constituted by the government of India under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005. 
• The fund is managed by the Department of Expenditure, Union Ministry of Finance 
• It provides grants in aid to the state governments for mitigation projects related to disasters that are mentioned in the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) guidelines.
• The funds are released by the Union Finance  Ministry in consultation with the Home Ministry as per the recommendation of the High-Level Committee.

Details of the Rs. 3027.86 crore to the States 

Drought Prone States

• Outlay Rs. 2022.16 crore for 49 districts of 12 most drought-prone states. The share of the central government will be Rs 1200 crore 
• Beneficiary states- Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.

Mitigation Project on Lightning Safety 

• Outlay Rs 186.78 crore for 50 districts of 10 states. 
• Beneficiary states-  Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Mitigation Scheme for Forest Fire Risk Management 

• Outlay Rs  818.92  crore for 144 of 19 states. Central share Rs. 690.63 crore.

Beneficiary states- Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nad,u and Uttarakhand
