Indian Constitution in Sanskrit and Maithili language launched

President Droupadi Murmu unveiled the Indian constitution's translation in Sanskrit and Maithili language in New Delhi on 26 November 2024 on the occasion of the Samvidhan Diwas. Maithili is mainly spoken in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Nepal.

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and other dignitaries were present at the occasion.

The government of India has undertaken a project to translate the Indian constitution into all 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

The 75-year celebration of the Indian Constitution 

This year marks 75 years of the enactment of the Indian constitution. The Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Indian constitution on 26 November 1949, which was promulgated on 26 January 1950.

Since 2015, 26 November has been observed in the country as the Samvidhan Diwas. 

A function was held in the Parliament's Samvidhan Sadan to observe the Samvidhan Diwas and the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the constitution.

The old Parliament building has been renamed Samvidhan Sadan by the Modi government.

On the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Main events of the function

• President Murmu led the members of the Parliament in reading the Constitution's preamble.
• A commemorative coin and stamp dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India was released.
• Release of Books titled “Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse” and “Making of the Constitution of India & its Glorious Journey”
• Release of Booklet dedicated to the Art of the Constitution of India.
• Release of the Constitution of India in Sanskrit.
• Release of the Constitution of India in Maithili.

Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhimaan Campaign launched 

• To mark the 75th year of the adoption of the constitution, the President also launched the 

year-long campaign titled “Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhimaan” on 25 November 2024.

• The year-long campaign will remember and honour the contributions of the Constitution’s makers and reiterate the core values of our Constitution.

Hindi Translation of the Indian Constitution 

• The Indian Constitution is the world's longest-written constitution, framed by the Constituent Assembly of India.
• The Constituent Assembly decided that the Constitution would be drafted in English Language.
• However, on-demand from some members, a translation committee was set up to translate the constitution into Hindi.
• Ghansyam Das Gupta was appointed head of the 41-member Translation Committee. 
• On 24 January 1950, the committee submitted the translated Hindi copy of the Constitution to the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad.
• The Constituent Assembly members signed both the English and Hindi versions of the Constitution on  24 January 1950. 

Constitutional Status to Hindi Translation 

• Article 394 A was inserted into the constitution by the 58th Constitutional Amendment Act 1987, which states that the Hindi translation of the Constitution is the authoritative text and has the same meaning as the original English version.
• The President is authorised to publish the Hindi translation of the Constitution and any amendments made to it in English.
